Manchester City Humble Liverpool as Premier League Worries Mount for Arne Slot

Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City wasn’t just a loss. It was a reality check. On The Gags Tandon Show from Anfield Index, Gags Tandon and Jack McIndoe dissected the performance with brutal honesty. “That’s humiliating,” Gags said early on. “Everything went against us in the first half that could have.”

From disallowed goals to defensive calamities, Liverpool’s outing lacked structure, spark and, above all, belief. “We were the second best the whole time in the game,” admitted Jack. “Just ugly football to watch from Liverpool today, mate.”

The raw emotion spilled from every corner of the podcast. And rightly so. Liverpool have now lost five Premier League matches, including four away on the bounce. A stark contrast from the side that lifted the title only months ago under Arne Slot.

Disallowed Goals and Defensive Errors

Much of the frustration centred on a chalked-off goal that could’ve swung momentum. Van Dijk’s header from a Salah corner seemed to put Liverpool level before VAR intervened. “That’s a goal,” said Gags. “Micah said it at half-time. He’s not interfering with the play. If that goes in, the team settles and actually plays a little.”

Instead, Liverpool crumbled. City capitalised with a deflected second goal just before half-time. “It kills you, really,” said Jack. “Confidence just before the stroke of half-time. It’s gone.”

Defensively, Liverpool were disorganised. The switch that saw Van Dijk operating at left-back led to confusion and directly contributed to City’s opener. “It was Wirtz who didn’t go close enough to Matheus Nunes,” Gags explained. “But he was expecting Robbo to pull out to him. Miscommunication again.”

And Ibrahima Konaté? He came under heavy fire. “This is an all-timer bullshit run from Ibu,” Gags snapped. “Just not good at all. Bad at passing, can’t clear the ball.”

Attacking Bluntness and Tactical Concerns

Beyond the back line, Liverpool were toothless up top. One shot on target summed up their attacking woes. “That’s abysmal, really,” said Jack. “Even the final third today… just really lacking any real guile.”

Gags called out Hugo Ekitike by name. “Really poor,” he said. “No touches, not involved, not even trying to get involved.”

The coaching decisions didn’t escape scrutiny either. Substitutions were labelled too little, too late. “Cheisa coming on with ten minutes left, what’s he meant to do? Score a hat-trick?” Jack scoffed.

Gags was bewildered by Slot’s reluctance to shuffle the system. “You bring Gakpo on, leave Wirtz where he is, play Gakpo up top. Do something different.”

City’s wide threat, particularly from Doku, exposed Liverpool brutally. “Doku was a nightmare all game,” Gags said. “He goes and scores a worldie. He shuts us up with that one.”

Slot Under Pressure and Transfer Needs

With Liverpool sitting eight points behind Arsenal, and Manchester United leapfrogging them on goal difference, Arne Slot’s project is at a crossroads.

“There’s a long way to go,” warned Jack. “But this season’s already getting away from us.”

Both Gags and Jack were clear: reinforcements are essential. “I think we need a six, a CB,” Gags declared. “Probably a right-back as well.”

Jack backed that view. “Konaté’s performance, lack of clear progression from the back… it’s alarming. I wanted to see a left-sided centre-half come in that’s comfortable on the ball.”

Bradley earned rare praise. “He had a real rough game because he had Doku on him,” Gags said. “But he really tried his best.”

Still, that doesn’t mask the broader structural issues. “There’s clearly an identity of play there,” Jack observed. “But at the minute, we’re just being bypassed. So disjointed.”

Where Next for Liverpool?

The international break offers a brief pause. But Slot must act. “If he goes on this continuous losing run still, there’s no stopping the pitchforks,” said Gags. “Champions League football – you can’t be missing out on that money.”

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures include Forest, West Ham, Sunderland, Leeds and Spurs. On paper, all winnable. But form suggests otherwise.

“We’ve lost every single away game after that Burnley win,” Gags reminded. “All Ls. All Reds.”

Asked if last season’s team could retain the title, the answer was telling. “No,” said Gags. “Because the losing run started with that team last season.”

This isn’t just a form dip. It’s a pattern. Liverpool have conceded seventeen league goals. “We need to stop conceding set-piece goals,” said Jack. “It’s killing us.”

If there’s any hope left, it lies in the Champions League. “Let’s make it a Champions League season if we can,” Gags urged. “We’re a Champions League team.”

But to stay one, changes are urgent. “Right now, Liverpool don’t even have a Plan A,” Gags warned. “Forget Plan B. We need at least two plans in place.”

City looked every inch a title challenger. Doku dazzled, Haaland was clinical and Guardiola’s system dismantled Liverpool’s.

For Slot, this was a lesson in Premier League reality. And if he doesn’t adapt quickly, the season could slip beyond repair.
