Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor says that even on the Wembley pitch after winning a domestic treble, members of her squad were discussing missing out on the Women’s Champions League trophy.

In her first season in charge, the Frenchwoman’s side have been unbeaten domestically and today completed a clean sweep of English silverware with a 3-0 win over holders Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final.

However, even in the aftermath of an exceptional team performance, Bompastor admits thoughts of European glory are on her players’ minds.

What did Sonia Bompastor say?

“It feels really great to be dominant in England,  but when you think about it, we didn’t win the Champions League and I think our goal and our ambition is to make sure we compete against the best teams in Europe – Barcelona for sure, but also teams like Lyon.

“I’m not going to mention some names but we were super happy to enjoy the treble – but some of the people who were on the pitch were already mentioning we are missing the Champions League. So that’s who we are.”

Chelsea have secured a domestic treble – a feat they also managed in 2020/21 – but their elimination by Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals is still clearly on their minds. Bompastor said earlier this week that she hopes new investment from Alexis Ohanian will help secure European glory.

Ohanian, who this week invested reportedly around £20m in the team, was at Wembley to witness their victory with his wife Serena Williams. There were comparisons to the approach of United’s owners. While CEO Omar Berrada, technical director Jason Wilcox, and part-owner Avram Glazer were at Wembley, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was not.

Speaking about Chelsea’s new investors, Bompastor said: “You can feel from the beginning that they have the right mentality coming into Chelsea. I think it was the best way to welcome them as well with this game, this final and this result.

“When we talk about having the right support coming from everyone in the club, today just shows everyone is really involved in this women’s team and it feels great.”

With some expressing concern that Chelsea will keep pulling away from their domestic competitors, Bompastor stressed she wants “bring everyone with us.”

“I think it’s important for most of the teams to invest in the women’s game because I think if you have more competition, you are able to perform better. I think even for me I’m not going to say I want all the other teams to go down because it will be different so we want to have competition.

“We want to be the top of the league and bring everyone with us. So this is what we want to achieve, but we need the other teams to still invest and come with us.”
