Derby County take on Luton Town on Good Friday in what is a huge game for both clubs in the relegation battle.
Derby County host Luton Town on Good Friday in a huge game for both clubs as they battle to stay in the Championship.
After an upturn in form under John Eustace, the Rams go into the clash sitting one point and one place above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Luton are 23rd, with Cardiff City sandwiched between the two, but the Hatters know they can go level on points with Derby if they pick up all three points at Pride Park.
A defeat in the Midlands would leave Luton looking nailed on for successive relegations, so all connected to both clubs are aware of what is at stake in this game.
Derby’s squad has been impacted by injuries for some time now, with ten senior players having missed games recently.
Many of those are long-term absentees, with Curtis Nelson, David Ozoh, Joe Ward, Dajaune Brown and Corey Blackett-Taylor having not played for months now.
Elsewhere, Lars-Jorgen Salvesen has suffered a serious knee injury, whilst Ryan Nyambe, Ben Osborn and Kemar Roofe all have muscle problems.
Most recently, Callum Elder suffered a knock earlier this month, and there was hope that he would be available over the Easter period.
Yet, speaking to the club’s media ahead of the game, Eustace revealed that there were no players set to be available, and that there were no fresh concerns. The only update came about Blackett-Taylor, who is now back training, but the game against Luton will come too soon for the attacker.
So, Derby are set to go with the same group that drew 2-2 at Portsmouth last time out, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the same XI started again.
Even though Luton don’t have the same number of injuries as Derby, they are certainly impacted, with several influential players among the four absentees they have.
Alfie Doughty has been a key figure over the years, but a hamstring injury means he will miss the rest of the season.
The impressive recent draw against Leeds United came at a cost as well, with striker Elijah Adebayo suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury that is going to keep him out for the best part of a year.
Jacob Brown is another who won’t play in the final four games, which has left the Hatters short of natural strikers in the squad.
Finally, Shandon Baptiste is another who is out, although there was some good news on the injury front last week as Teden Mengi made his first appearance of 2025 against Blackburn, so he will be in contention to feature.
Other than that, Matt Bloomfield is likely to keep the changes to a minimum, but the poor loss against Rovers means he may switch things up.
