The Athletic have revealed the reasoning behind Chelsea not signing a player that they looked destined to sign in the January transfer window.
It was a really hyped deal that came from nowhere and shocked, and annoyed, Chelsea fans all around the globe.
But what it did do was spark up a very bland transfer window for The Blues despite not actually signing the player in the end.
Chelsea had a pretty quiet transfer window in the winter despite people like Fabrizio Romano and others telling us that it was going to be very busy! It was the opposite from busy in the end. Other than some dry loan deals done for players such as Ben Chilwell, who joined Crystal Palace on deadline day in the end, and Axel Disasi, who also went to another Premier League side in the shape of Champions League chasing Aston Villa, there really wasn’t much more than happened, especially in terms of new arrivals which the squad actually needed.
Chelsea’s Aljenadro Garnacho interest at least made things rather entertaining, even though most Chelsea fans did not want him. The Blues did not sign him in the end, and it sounds like it was all just over-hyped anyway.

The Athletic report that enquiries were made for Garnacho but nothing went further than that. If the right deal for the right price could be done, Chelsea would act. If not, it was all about making some headway for summer moves and the club believe they have done this.
So there you have it, all that news and noise over just a simple enquiry that they never took any further anyway. We’ll see if they go back for him the summer – I will be surprised if they do.
