Germany is out of the World Cup. Everyone is disappointed. We all thought Julian Nagelsmann’s men would make it to the next round against France. I’d already spoken to colleagues who’d asked what flights to book if they were to come to the German camp from the French camp to hold interviews with the German stars. I say “stars” loosely… as they’re out of the competition! In the last two World Cups, Germany failed to make it out of the group stage – and now we fell short in a new knockout round that previously didn’t exist! So, to be honest, we’re feeling just as disappointed as we were in those tournaments.

There were some suspicions that this Germany team was a tournament side and would get progressively better as the World Cup went on. But that suspicion proved to be false, as we fell short on penalties to Paraguay. What is left for us?

The disallowed Jonathan Tah goal was difficult to stomach, but it’s all part of the game. Ultimately, if you need a goal like this in extra time to get past Paraguay, then you have to question whether it’s even a German-esque victory. You have to win in normal time – that is the typically German way. More to the point, if you can’t raise your game against Paraguay, you have to worry about how we would have fared against Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola. Better, perhaps, for Germany to be out now rather than face a potentially embarrassing scoreline against the World Cup favourites.

Julian Nagelsmann out… Jürgen Klopp in?

I wrote a piece for The Telegraph – discussing the virtues of Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp – that, on reflection, feels somewhat timely given Germany’s exit from the World Cup. Not to mention the questions that must now follow around Julian Nagelsmann’s continued helmanship of the national team. Tuchel, of course, can’t be considered a potential successor at this point while he continues to manage England. But perhaps that isn’t such a big problem, because while the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich boss is undoubtedly respected in his native Germany, he’s not loved – not like Klopp. And let’s be clear: everyone loves Jürgen Klopp. He’s not only a very, very good manager (like Tuchel), he’s also a very sympathetic character. Everyone genuinely adores him; the team loves him, the supporters love him, and Germany loves him too. That’s why we think the next Bundestrainer should be Jürgen Klopp.

The great pity is that we still have a Bundestrainer at the helm, and that’s Julian Nagelsmann. But I think, given there will be talks taking place in the coming days when the team is back in Frankfurt (and also when all the bosses are present), they will talk about the future of Nagelsmann. He didn’t say that he would step down – that’s a pity. After such a tournament, stepping down is probably the right thing to do. I can see why he didn’t; he has two years left on his current deal. So the 38-year-old will earn a lot of money if he stays put. Of course, the same can be said if Germany sack him! This is the way it should be, because everyone really wants to see Jürgen Klopp leading the country. The best thing about this scenario is that it means England can’t take him away again! You can keep Tuchel, and we’ll get Jürgen Klopp.

The former Liverpool boss has every skill that Nagelsmann is missing. I heard from the camp that he wasn’t talking to the players, and everyone was wondering why. In Germany, we have a word, “besserwisser”, which roughly translates to someone who always knows better than everyone else what the best way is to do something. But if you’re like this, then you kind of need to back that up with results.

Bayern transfer news: Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown incoming

In this case, Bayern’s supervisory board feel Max Eberl did a good job getting these deals over the line. This time, he told everyone about his plans before getting talks underway; Vincent Kompany was on board and really wanted to add the pair to his squad. As everyone close to Bayern knows, Kompany can have whatever wishes he wants, but it all has to go through the supervisory board. Of course, it helps that everyone on the board is such a big fan of the Belgian head coach. This makes it easier for Max Eberl to get his transfers over the line. Eberl, to his credit, has learned to keep in contact with the supervisory board rather than just having an idea on his own and running with it.

Germany’s out of the World Cup, so I think in July there’ll be no need to keep any secrets around Nathaniel Brown – this will happen soon now with an official medical check. On Saibari, it was all a question of taxes. But from July 1, the tax year resets, so this announcement will come soon. However, Ismael Saibari is still involved in the tournament with Morocco.

Bayern Munich looking at Antonio Nusa?

❌ It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich will shortly make a move for Antonio Nusa. He’s an interesting player, and also interesting for Bayern Munich. However, Max Eberl has a big problem: he’s spent a lot of money on the two deals for Saibari and Brown (about €110m [£94.7m] – a lot of money). He did complete the sale of Jonah Kusi-Asare for a very small fee, but there’s still so much work to do with other players on the periphery of the squad. It’s looking difficult to sell Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza. João Palhinha is still on the payroll, as is Hiroki Ito and Min-jae Kim. Much to do for Eberl!

Real Madrid planning to replace Vinicius Jr with Michael Olise?

The Michael Olise situation is getting a little bit dangerous for Bayern Munich. There are rumours around the Frenchman, where the people around him are allegedly saying that he knows he can always win the league with FC Bayern, but he’s already done this, and now he has the DFB Pokal also under his belt. The Champions League, meanwhile, is perhaps a little more difficult to win at Bayern Munich. There are rumours he’d like to make a transfer somewhere else, and that Real Madrid is the club he should be dreaming of. Olise doesn’t talk much, so you never know if the rumours are true. Still, the people who are talking are supposedly really close to him. This could be a problem for Bayern, because everyone knows that dissatisfied players are not good players. I don’t see the France international signing a new contract at Bayern in the near future.

The Harry Kane to Barcelona rumours won’t go away

✅ It is TRUE: Harry Kane’s representatives were contacted by Barcelona. This was confirmed to me. But I also heard that Barcelona has no chance of snatching Kane from Bayern Munich. He wants to stay in Munich and sign a new contract. However, he doesn’t want to do that right this moment while he’s still competing in the World Cup with the English national team. Regardless, Kane just wants to negotiate with Bayern Munich, and I think they’ll find a solution.

Said El Mala to the Premier League and Liverpool?

There is always Premier League interest in Said El Mala. I think Liverpool is a step too high for this player at this stage in his development. He has quality, but this isn’t so big that you can compare him at the moment with Yan Diomande. I think he will make the step to the Premier League – a league he’s a big fan of – but if it’s Liverpool, I have doubts.

Bayern competing for Ayyoub Bouaddi with Premier League clubs

I think being able to sign a player like Ayyoub Bouaddi for a smaller fee by agreeing to loan him back to Lille for a year is the kind of solution that would appeal to Max Eberl, as he isn’t allowed to buy any more players if he doesn’t sell some squad players like Ito, Kim and Palhinha. This is the problem, so perhaps a deal like this could work. But Bayern Munich aren’t pushing so hard to make this particular transfer happen. Eberl has to sell players first.

Alphonso Davies and the incoming Nathaniel Brown

✅ It is TRUE: Alphonso Davies is working with a personal trainer to develop more consistent fitness levels for Bayern Munich, and he’s looking increasingly likely to stay at the club beyond the summer transfer window. I think he will stay at Bayern Munich, and the club has no problem with him staying put. They know he has a contract and that he’s a very good player. The problem was never the Canada international’s quality – it’s his injury proneness. Bayern want Nathaniel Brown not to replace Davies but because they think he’s a big Bundesliga talent for the future. It was the case that they had to buy the German now or risk a Premier League club coming in for the fullback. Davies can play two or more positions, and Brown is even more positionally versatile. There’s not a clear need to sell Davies, but if a really good offer came in, Bayern would consider it.

Potential Bayern Munich sales

This is a big problem for Max Eberl ahead of contract talks in August. He has a good chance of keeping his job, as there have been good deals – but he has to sell! Everyone knows it’s difficult to get money for a player like Sacha Boey who hasn’t really played a great deal for Bayern. It’s the same for Bryan Zaragoza, and Palhinha is too expensive for most clubs. Loan deals would be impossible for Bayern, as they want money this summer. Eberl has to get these players sold and off the wage bill.

It would be very fine for Bayern Munich if there were offers on the table for Zaragoza and Alexander Nübel. Most want to just loan Zaragoza, and it’s complicated around Alexander Nübel. The goalkeeper has a high salary, and he wants to keep bringing in this money. So, as you can imagine, it’s hard to sell this player. At the moment, it seems the 29-year-old wants to come back to Säbener Straße, where he has no chance to play. Max Eberl already told Nübel’s agents that he’ll be on the bench if he comes back. Bayern Munich aren’t really happy with this situation.
