Bottom of the table and 14 points from safety with nine games to go, it would take an unforeseen turnaround to keep the club in the division.

Wolves set a newPremier League record after failing to win in their opening 19 games of the campaign. That run eclipsed the previous 17-game mark, set by Sheffield United in 2020-21. The all-time record for a winless start to a top-flight season is held by Bolton, who failed to win any of their first 22 games in 1902-03

Wolves'win over Aston Villa on Friday night has at least ensured that Rob Edwards' side moved to 13 points, eclipsing Derby County's infamous record for the lowest points tally in Premier League history (11).

That victory over their Midlands rivals also means Wolves can now not suffer the earliest ever relegation from the Premier League. Derby County's 2007-08 team also hold that record, with their demotion to the second tier confirmed on 29th March 2008.

Southampton set the record for the earliest ever relegation in terms of games played last season. The Saints' relegation was confirmed with seven games still to play, on April 6th 2025.

The struggling South Coast side ended the 2024-25 campaign with just 12 points, the second-lowest total in the league's history.
