Athletic’s season has largely sunk, yet a small group have stood up, according to El Correo. Unai Simón, Berchiche, Gorosabel, Laporte, Jauregizar, Robert Navarro and Guruzeta stood up best.
Simón did not match last year but handled a severe test as the defence faltered. After 30 league games Athletic have shipped 14 more than in all 38 last season, yet he tops the paper’s ratings.
Right-back has been an issue, highlighted by Vivián filling in at Montilivi. Gorosabel is not the chief culprit, Areso has disappointed more, and his 26 outings, 18 starts, have met expectations.
Laporte arrived as a big signing but has been acceptable. Months without action, a late start and injury, nearly two months out, framed his year, so a pass mark is fair.
At 36, Berchiche is weighing up his future. On this form he should, Adama Boiro never threatened his place, and having one specialist left-back would be alarming.
Jauregizar was ever-present until 20 February, missing Elche on matchday 25, and is the most used outfield player. Valverde relied on him with Beñat Prados out and Vesga and Rego off form, making his recent dip logical.
Many ask why Robert Navarro has not played more, and, to a lesser extent, Nico Serrano. In 16 starts and 20 cameos he produced 7 goals and 3 assists, outscoring Sancet, the Williams brothers and Berenguer. Guruzeta’s 13, close to his 16 peak, also merits recognition.
