Jordan Pickford celebrated a milestone on Tuesday night after recording his 40th clean sheet for England.
Pickford has been England’s undisputed number one for several years and has now recorded 40 clean sheets in just 78 caps. The 31-year-old has climbed up to joint-third when it comes to shut-outs for the Three Lions but still has some distance to reach the record.
Regarded by many as England’s greatest goalkeeper, Banks was the last line of defence for the nation’s 1966 World Cup winners. The former Leicester City and Stoke City shot-stopper recorded 35 clean sheets in his 73 caps.
Banks’ famous save from Pele at the 1970 World Cup is remembered as one of football’s very best.
Pickford has climbed to joint-third on this list after back-to-back clean sheets this month. England are yet to concede a goal in 2026 World Cup qualification, with Pickford reaching 40 shut-outs in just 78 caps.
The Everton goalkeeper has been a model of consistency for the Three Lions, helping England reach consecutive European Championship finals.
Despite strong competition, David Seaman held England’s number one position for close to a decade. The ex-Arsenal goalkeeper was a major part of the side that reached the Euro ’96 semi-final on home soil, earning inclusion in the Team of the Tournament.
He saved two penalties during that tournament, from Scotland’s Gary McAllister in a group match, and a shootout stop from Miguel Ángel Nadal’s as England eliminated Spain on penalties.
Joe Hart boasted a clean sheet percentage of 57% during his long career with England.
Hart racked up 43 clean sheets in his 75 caps, representing the Three Lions at three major tournaments.
England’s record appearance maker, Peter Shilton turned out for the national team 125 times.
The goalkeeper represented the Three Lions at five major tournaments and, despite not making his World Cup debut until the age of 32, shares the tournament record of 10 clean sheets alongside France’s Fabien Barthez.
Shilton’s career with England spanned 20 years with his final appearance coming in 1990, aged 40.
