Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has kicked off the new La Liga season in spectacular fashion.

His decisive performance against Athletic Bilbao, where he scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 win, has set the tone for what looks to be a promising season. Lewandowski’s early form has been impressive, particularly after his double against Valencia.

Interestingly, despite several attempts on goal against Athletic Club—hitting the post twice and being denied by a remarkable save from the keeper—Lewandowski persevered and found the net in the 75th minute.

Best start in five years

With three goals in just two matches, there is a sense of optimism surrounding what Lewandowski can achieve this season.

It must be noted that these three goals mark Lewandowski’s best start to a La Liga campaign since joining Barcelona.

In his debut season (2022/23), he managed to score twice in the first two matches, thanks to his brace against Real Sociedad. Last season, however, he did not find the net in the opening two games.

Interestingly, his current form not only surpasses his previous starts with Barça but also improves upon his early season performances during his final years at Bayern Munich.

In the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, Lewandowski scored twice in the opening two matches. However, even during his incredible 2021 season at Bayern, where he scored 41 goals in 29 league games, Lewandowski only managed one goal in the first two matches.

It is worth noting that this phenomenal season was under the guidance of Hansi Flick, who recently praised Lewandowski’s significant contribution to Barcelona’s victory against Athletic Bilbao.

For what it is worth, Lewandowski’s personal best start to any campaign came in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season. During that campaign, he began with an extraordinary tally of five goals in the first two matches.

This strong start set the pace for a remarkable run, where he scored in 11 consecutive games, accumulating 16 goals during that period.
