Mbappe's wait for an elusive European success continues, with no player having ever scored more career goals in the competition without winning the Champions League (70).

The 27-year-oldscored 15 goals in 11 games during Real Madrid's run to the last eight this season, with only one player having ever scored more goals in a single Champions League season.

Real Madrid's elimination means Mbappe misses the chance to take the all-time record, held byCristiano Ronaldo, who scored 17 goals in 2013/14.

Mbappe's prolific European campaign has, however, surpassedLionel Messi's best-ever Champions League campaign.

The formerBarcelona star's best-ever Champions League season saw Messi score 14 times in 2014/15, as the Catalans won the competition.

Of the six occasions that a player has scored 15+ goals in a single Champions League season, five have done so while representing Real Madrid.Robert Lewandowski is the only exception, after scoring 15 times for Bayern Munich in 2019/20.
