Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor was thrilled as his side got their first Women’s Super League win of the season, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 with a late Mia Enderby brace – and afterwards he hailed the contributions of new signings Denise O’Sullivan and Aurelie Csillag.

“They both made good contributions and they will both get a lot better for that game,” he told the club’s official website.

“We’ve not had a huge amount of time to work with them and the more you work with players, like you saw with the rest of the players today, we are starting to build something here and it takes a little bit of time. We’re patient.

“We know Denise is really important at the moment because of her leadership and maturity. We freshened things up with Aurelie [in the second half] because she put a lot into the game and we’re asking her to play differently to the way she was at Freiburg.”

Denise O’Sullivan signed for Liverpool earlier in the month after almost a decade at North Carolina Courage in NWSL.

Adding that the squad and club had had “a lot to contend with on and off the pitch this season”, Taylor said that he thought they were stronger for those experiences.

“You can see a team that is really together, even before today. I can see that with this team, they are really together. They are a good group to work with, they are really hungry to learn and improve and get better.

“And we want to do well for our great supporters; we were able to give them something to cheer about today, which was really nice.”

Liverpool: Their next matches

Liverpool’s next match will be a tough test. They travel to Manchester United on Sunday, 1st February.

And despite the win, Liverpool remain at the bottom of the table, because second-bottom West Ham United picked up their second victory of the league season, 2-1 over Leicester City.

The team who are in the worst current run of form sit 10th in the table – Everton, who have lost five of their last six matches.
