The new Ibou Konate: Liverpool start talks for sensational replacement

Ibrahima Konate will officially leave Liverpool with the end of his contract on June 30th. It ends a five-year stay at the club and a successful one - the Frenchman has been an elite centre-back for the Reds.

Losing him for free is a massive blow, in other words. Liverpool don't receive a transfer fee whatsoever and must find an adequate way to replace the star.

Now, it's possible that they postpone the replacement until next year. Both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk will be out of contract in 2027 and it makes some sense to do the big rebuild then.

However, it would undoubtedly be nicer to find a replacement this summer. We imagine Liverpool would only move for the 'perfect' signing but they should look.

Perhaps they found him, too. Voetbal International reports that Liverpool made contact over a deal for Jan Paul van Hecke, who is expected to leave Bright for the right offer.

The problem appears to be that Tottenham Hotspur are all-in on the defender. They've made two bids already and Van Hecke is keen to go there.

Liverpool may not meet Spurs' bidding power here, given their need for a new centre-back isn't as high. That looks to be decisive - the Reds will want to splash most of their cash on attacking areas.

There's no doubt that Van Hecke would be an ideal signing, though. He's a brilliant defender who's also fantastic on the ball. One of the best in the Premier League, in fact.

We'll see where Liverpool land with it all but there's no question that Van Hecke is the kind of player they should be considering to replace Konate. Any lesser player may not even be considered.

Jan Paul van Hecke: Situation Summary

Brighton & Hove Albion Campaign and Stats

As of 8 June 2026, Jan Paul van Hecke remains a Brighton & Hove Albion player, though he is currently at the centre of intense transfer speculation. The 25-year-old Dutch defender enjoyed a standout 2025/26 campaign, making 36 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals, and providing three assists. His commanding performances at the heart of the Seagulls' defence earned him a reputation as one of the league's premier ball-playing centre-backs, further cementing his place in the Netherlands national squad.

Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Pursuit

The defender’s future is currently subject to a high-stakes transfer battle. Tottenham Hotspur, seeking to rebuild following a difficult 2025/26 season, have made Van Hecke a primary target. Brighton chief executive Paul Barber has officially confirmed that the club has rejected two separate bids from Spurs, maintaining that the Seagulls are firm on their valuation, widely reported to be in the region of £50 million. With only 12 months remaining on his contract, Brighton face a critical decision this summer to either secure a lucrative transfer fee or risk losing him for free in 2027.
