The new king of the Bernabéu? Mbappé closes in on all-time Champions League season record
Kylian Mbappe is edging closer to breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League scoring record after his latest goals for Real Madrid.
Kylian Mbappe moved one step closer to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League legacy after starring in Real Madrid’s 6 -1 win over Monaco in matchday 7 of the league phase.
Mbappe scored twice against his former Ligue 1 rivals. The performance strengthened Madrid’s position in the tournament and pushed the forward closer to one of the most iconic records in Champions League history.
Thanks to his brace against Monaco, Mbappe has now scored 11 goal in six Champions League matches this season. That total equals the number of goals Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 2015 /16 Champions League campaign, a season that ended with Real Madrid lifting the trophy under Zinedine Zidane.
Ronaldo later raised the bar even higher scoring 16 goal in the 2016 edition and setting the all time record with 17 goal in single Champions League season in 2014 when Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the final.
With several matches still to play and Real Madrid advancing deep into the competition, Mbappe now has realistic chance to equal or surpass Ronaldo’s record.
His current scoring rate suggests that the record held by the Madeira born legend is under genuine threat if Madrid continue their strong European run.
The comparison between the two star has intensified this season especially after Mbappe previously matched Ronaldo’s milestone of 59 goal in single calendar year further.
