According to HLN, Genk are set to hand over the starting goalkeeper spot to 17-year-old Lucca Brughmans. The youngster now follows in the footsteps of the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Maarten Vandevoordt, and Mike Penders, all of whom came through the Genk academy before moving on to some of the biggest clubs in Europe. Brughmans started during the play-offs for Genk and did enough to impress head coach Nicky Hayen, who has decided to give the starting spot to the teenager for the upcoming season.
As a result, two of Genk’s more experienced goalkeepers have been told they can leave. Hendrik van Crombrugge only has a year left on his contract and is now free to find a new club. Tobias Lawal, 25, only joined Genk last summer as a replacement for Mike Penders who had joined Chelsea. However, Lawal failed to impress Hayen during the past few months and has now been told that, despite having a contract for a few more years, he is also free to leave this summer. Genk are looking to go into the season with another new goalkeeper, with 18-year-old Emile Doucouré now set to be back up and part of the senior squad.
