Arsenal beat OH Leuven 3-0 in the last match of the group standings in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
But they will face them again in February as they have been drawn against them in a two-legged play-off to decide who goes on to the quarter-finals.
And the winning team will take on Chelsea in that match.
Goals from Olivia Smith, Beth Mead and an own goal wrapped up the 3-0 win on Wednesday, in front of a record crowd for women’s football in Belgium.
“I think the way they have been performing, it’s really impressive,” Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers said of Leuven. “It says everything about how the game is growing. A team from Belgium is doing this and they’re also through to the knockout phase.”
Chelsea finished third in the group standings phase of the competition with a 2-1 win away at Wolfsburg, so they progressed automatically to the quarter-finals, pleasing manager Sonia Bompastor.
She said after the match: “The good thing is we don’t have to play two more games, but also, we know we are already qualified directly to the quarter-final. That’s what we wanted to achieve coming here.”
Manchester United will take on Atletico Madrid in the play-off.
The winners will then play Bayern Munich.
Paris FC will play Real Madrid in the play-off for the right to face top seeds Barcelona.
And in an intriguing quarter, Wolfsburg take on Juventus – with the winners facing Lyon.
The teams are now seeded based on where they finished in the league standings in this part of the season.
The higher-seeded teams will now get to play their second legs at home.
That means Arsenal (who finished fifth), Manchester United (sixth), Real Madrid (seventh) and Juventus (eighth) will play their play-off second legs at home.
And then in the quarter-finals, Barcelona, Bayern, Chelsea and Lyon will host the second legs of the clashes.
The play-offs will take place on 11th and 12th February (first leg) and then 18th and 19th February (second leg).
The quarter-finals will be played on 24th and 25th March (first leg) and 1st and 2nd April (second leg).
