Athletic top the global table for academy minutes this season, well clear of Barcelona, in a ranking of clubs from 25 major leagues compiled by Transfermarkt.

Javier Tebas, La Liga’s president, said in a post on X that while others spend on transfers Spanish football keeps producing talent, that youth development is about identity, sustainability and competitiveness, that the numbers are emphatic, and that only one club from England, one from Italy and one from Germany feature among the major European leagues, with France missing from the top 20.

Lezama graduates have played 41,507 minutes this season. Barcelona’s tally is 27,127, with Celta Vigo on 25,154.

Four more La Liga sides make the top 20, Real Sociedad, Málaga, Sporting de Gijón and Real Madrid.

The list includes several prominent European clubs, yet giants such as Bayern, PSG and Manchester City do not appear.
