Julian Nagelsmann says Deniz Undav is unlikely to be promoted to a starting role despite the striker’s 88th-minute winner in Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ghana.

Introduced from the bench, the VfB Stuttgart forward settled the friendly late on. “I thank the fans for chanting my name. That made me happy,” Undav said, speaking to SWR Fernsehen.

Nagelsmann had outlined before kick-off that squad roles were already defined and that he views Undav as an impact option.

Asked if his status could change, Undav said, “If I keep scoring goals, maybe that role will change”.

Nagelsmann kept the door only slightly ajar. “We’ll see. But it’s unlikely, because the roles are for the World Cup, not for March.”

He said he did not think Undav was involved until the goal, and that the 29-year-old is there to finish when opponents tire. He added that if the striker already has 70 minutes in his legs, it becomes difficult.

“But hopefully next time they don’t boo Leroy Sané. That was a pity,” Undav added.
