West Ham United got their first win of the Barclays Women’s Super League season on Sunday – defeating Everton 3-1 at home.

It lifted them off the bottom of the table, with Liverpool dropping to last place despite a 1-1 draw against champions Chelsea.

And defender Amber Tysiak – who scored the Hammers’ second goal of the afternoon – spoke to the club’s official website about how the squad had managed to focus on grabbing the three points.

“We’ve been working really hard,” said Tysiak. “We’ve kept on believing, we’ve been doing our work in training and we played really, really great [against Everton].”

The result also dragged Everton more firmly into the relegation mix. The Toffees have not won since the opening day of the season, and are now only a point ahead of West Ham.

And Tysiak pointed to the goal rush against Southampton in the Subway Women’s League Cup as a catalyst for the win.

Rehanne Skinner’s side won 5-0 against the WSL2 team in midweek, meaning they knew where the goal was ahead of the weekend – and more players had got a taste for scoring.

“It was coming. It was coming last week, we did it on Wednesday [against Southampton] with a lot of goals and now we’re just so happy we’ve finally got the win [in the WSL].

“We’ve just grown [in front of goal]. We don’t think anymore, I think everyone just wants to score more goals. You can see today, it doesn’t matter who scores, how we score, we just want to score a lot of goals.”

Tysiak also thought West Ham had done well against now-league leaders Manchester City at the start of November, when they lost at the Joie Stadium by a single goal to nil.

“I think we came out of the international break [in October] brilliantly, and it’s been coming. [Manchester] City was [the] start, with a really good performance and then we kept on building. Finally we’ve now got the three points.”

West Ham will be hoping the League Cup continues to prove their lucky charm as they travel to Portsmouth on Sunday, 23rd November for their next match.

In the WSL, they next face Manchester United at Leigh on Sunday, 7th December.
