Sunderland are set for a seven-figure revenue boost this summer with a record 12 players at the FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

According to Sunderland Echo, the club will benefit from FIFA’s expanded Club Benefit Programme and have already received money from the qualification phase. FIFA will distribute about €350 million, including €100 million for qualifiers, and regulars Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete will have banked the club somewhere approaching €20,000.

A further €250 million is allocated for the finals, so Sunderland’s large contingent should add to the pot, though per-player returns are likely lower than Qatar 2022 because the competition now has 48 group stage entrants.

Xhaka, Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are with Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador respectively, with Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku for DR Congo.

Chemsdine Talbi is with Morocco, Simon Adingra with Ivory Coast, and Robin Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are in the Netherlands squad, while Wilson Isidor is with Haiti.

Talbi featured in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil, Adingra was unused as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0, and Brobbey came on late in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan.

Clubs are estimated to receive €5,000 per player per day across the group stage and build-up, guaranteeing payment for all 12. Assuming three weeks, that is around €105,000 per player and roughly £940,000 in total, a figure that should almost certainly exceed £1,000,000 once qualification payments and any progress are included.

The top two in each group advance, along with the eight best third-placed sides. Paraguay lost heavily to the USA and Haiti suffered a narrow defeat to Scotland, while others have started solidly. Senegal face France on Tuesday, and DR Congo play Portugal on Wednesday.
