Sunderland are set for a seven-figure revenue boost this summer as a number of their players prepare to depart for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
According to Sunderland Echo, FIFA has expanded its Club Benefit Programme, paying clubs for time their players spend on international duty, including qualifiers for the first time. After Qatar 2022, clubs shared around $209 million, about $10,000 per player per day, and the fund is now roughly $355 million.
Noah Sadiki and Melker Ellborg are the latest to move closer, having been in the DR Congo and Sweden squads that won play-offs against Jamaica and Poland on Tuesday night. Sunderland have already banked income from the recent qualifiers.
Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, who have qualified, and if fit are locks for their squads. Sadiki is a DR Congo regular, while Ellborg now has a strong chance with Sweden.
The same applies to Robin Roefs with the Netherlands, while Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are strong contenders after recent Ronald Koeman call-ups. Geertruida featured in qualifying and his versatility will surely work to his benefit.
Chemsdine Talbi made his first start for Morocco in a friendly on Tuesday and, having been in their recent AFCON squad, seems likely to travel this summer. Wilson Isidor will also travel after choosing Haiti and scoring his first international goal during this break. Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could also feature for Ivory Coast and DR Congo, though their Sunderland status by summer is uncertain.
If all 12 players make their squads, Sunderland would be guaranteed a payout for the fortnight long group stage and the build-up. Assuming a minimum three weeks on duty, each would have earned roughly £200,000 on the 2022 system, with a slightly larger return likely this time and more if nations progress, and with 16 teams advancing to the knockouts that is a strong possibility. On that basis, 12 players for three weeks equates to about £2,250,000, a fraction of Premier League riches but a welcome boost.
