The Storch family and John McEvoy have submitted a joint-bid for the Owls

As Sheffield Wednesday's search for new investment continues, so does the attention given on the club's situation from those on the outside.

It must be said, though, that it would prove particularly hard for any football supporter to be unaware of recent developments at Hillsborough - ones which have been extremely concerning too.

Initial murmerings of discontent in the blue and white half of the Steel City came to the fore in the spring of 2025, when reports of delayed wage payments from controversial former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, first came to light as the Owls looked to end the season with an unlikely play-off challenge.

Rather unsurprisingly, the mood soured at Hillsborough in rapid fashion, with former boss, Danny Rohl, growing publicly frustrated with the Thailand-based businessman's handling of a dire situation which saw a raft of experienced and high-profile players depart the club amid further delayed payments, whilst current boss, Henrik Pedersen, was instilled in his current position just nine days before the beginning of the current Championship season.

Wednesday now find themselves in the temporary hands of administrative group, Begbies Traynor, who have overseen matters in South Yorkshire since Chansiri placed the club into such measures on October 24th amid fears of a winding-up order due to a £1m tax bill unpaid to His Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

On the pitch, the Owls are effectively a League One club in all but name due to a deduction of 18 points, which has left them way adrift of safety with just over half of the campaign remaining.

Therefore, attention is firmly fixed on developments in the boardroom, with several high-profile bidders reportedly interested in taking the club on.

It has been suggested that an issue in proceedings has been the distinct lack of a front-runner in the race to take control, which has now led to reports that American billionaire, John McEvoy, has joined forces with the Storch Family to front what they hope would be a successful bid.

As a result, Plymouth Argyle supporters may have one eye on developments at Hillsborough despite the Greens' currently perilous position in the third tier.

In recent times, under-fire Argyle chairman, Simon Hallett, has made it no secret that he has been keen on external investment to help the Devon side progress forward, albeit he has been rather luckless on this particular front so far.

Such feats could have all changed in the summer, though, when the Telegraph initially reported that an American private equity firm - later revealed as the Storch Family - were to be part of a consortium eyeing a takeover at Home Park which also involved former Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Wales sensation, Gareth Bale.

Indeed, Bale was said to be utilised in a way which mirrored that of his former Galacticos teammate, Luka Modrić, who sits as a minority stakeholder on the board of Swansea City alongside music icon, Snoop Dogg.

Whilst it was unknown how much Bale was proposed to be involved in the day-to-day running of the club, preliminary talks were said to had taken place, although a formal bid would not materialise over time.

Fast-forward to the present, and the aforementioned McEvoy has been linked with a potential takeover of the Owls since late October, when it was initially revealed that at least £50m in funding had to be proved to Begbies Traynor.

The California-based businessman has never been involved in football ownership but boasts a portfolio which includes the Nashville Predators of the NHL and MLB franchise, the Colorado Rockies.

He also holds a niche link to the Owls, holding a stake in Various Artists Management, who manage Reverend and the Makers, fronted by lifelong Wednesdayite, Jon McClure.

As such, it has been reported that a joint-bid between McEvoy and the Storch Family has been submitted, whilst a move towards deciding the preferred bidder could happen in the coming days.

Both Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth have endured poor starts to their respective campaigns this term, albeit for extremely differing reasons.

There is a clear possibility that the two clubs could remain a division apart next season, with the Greens still unable to drag themselves away from relegation danger under Tom Cleverley despite the brilliance of summer recruit, Lorent Tolaj, in front of goal.

The two clubs were, of course, embroiled in a fascinating three-way promotion race in 2022/23 which saw Argyle crowned League One champions whilst Wednesday enjoyed a dramatic play-off success over both Peterborough United and Barnsley.
