Boyhood Red Gordon has also got two assists in the prestigious competition - leading to inevitable questions about his future and in particular another Liverpool link.

“It’s the same old, same old,” he is reported to have said. “I haven’t heard anything. They might want to tell me before they tell you. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.

“I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now. You look too far in the future and you start to underperform.

“And believe me I have done that and I am not going to do that now.”

The time is right for Anthony Gordon

Gordon signed a new long-term contract at St. James’ Park after the breakdown of his Liverpool move and amid so much uncertainty around the Anfield side’s attack they would be well-advised to take another shot at signing Gordon next summer.

Mohamed Salah looks set to leave along with Federico Chiesa and there is no doubt that improvements could be made in the case of Cody Gakpo.

He is a known Premier League quantity, is proving himself on the biggest stage and would no doubt jump at the chance to return to Liverpool.

Having left the club as a boy - before pursuing a career with Everton and Newcastle - Gordon has got unfinished business on Merseyside. Richard Hughes should definitely take another look.
