Manchester United are among a host of suitors waiting to see if they can snap up Dayot Upamecano as a free agent.

Indeed, after another high-spend summer window, INEOS are enticed by the idea of welcoming such a proven player for essentially nothing.

United’s interest in Dayot Upamecano

United have been linked with Upamecano on numerous occasions, particularly since his contract situation at Bayern Munich became so uncertain.

As things stand, the French international will depart the Allianz Arena at the end of the season and pull the curtains on his five-year tenure at the club.

Bayern chiefs are doing their utmost to tie him down to fresh terms – albeit to no avail as of yet. Upamecano is keen to see his efforts – and loyalty – rewarded with a lucrative signing bonus, which has led to something of a roadblock in negotiations.

In January, the 26-year-old will be able to open official transfer talks and even, perhaps, sign a pre-agreement with foreign clubs ahead of making a move next June.

Upamecano remains an integral part of Vincent Kompany’s plans this term despite the uncertainty over his future; he’s started five of Bayern’s six Bundesliga matches played and both of their opening Champions League outings.

What Christian Falk is hearing about United-linked Upamecano

German football expert Christian Falk shed some light on the centre-half’s situation via his CF Bayern Insider column, revealing: “There is a kind of agreement between Bayern and Upamecano about a base salary, as he’s going to be a free agent in the summer, but there is always a signing fee! And the signing fee is a problem in these talks.

“You have Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich and he was in the same situation last year. The Canadian got a lot of money, we heard around €20m-22m [£17.4m-19.1m], just for the signing fee! Upamecano, of course, knows about this and has been asking, ‘What about my signing fee?’

“If he goes to another club like Liverpool, he will get a signing fee as a free agent. Real Madrid and PSG are also interested. So, this is really difficult for Bayern as the wage bill for the team is already quite high, and there’s a target in place to lower this by 20% for the whole team. This makes things really difficult.

“I heard the difference between what Bayern Munich want to pay and what Upamecano wants is still very, very big.”

There may be questions as to whether a new central defender is necessary at Old Trafford in the summer, however, as recent reports have suggested Harry Maguire is closing in on a new deal to extend his Red Devils career.
