Billy Sharp has caused quite the reaction following his celebration against the Bantams
Doncaster Rovers forward and EFL icon Billy Sharp has made headlines once again, with his goal celebration against Bradford City on Saturday afternoon causing quite the reaction on social media.
Rovers and their West Yorkshire opponents both came into the encounter at the Eco-Power Stadium high on confidence after starting the League One season in impressive form following their respective promotions from League Two last campaign.
As a result of the two sides vying to end their third-tier exile last term, plenty of needle was generated among the players and supporters of both clubs in a dramatic end-of-season contest in South Yorkshire back in April, and such 'back-and-forth' behaviour continued into the weekend's clash.
Doncaster, like they did in the previous meeting, would end up emerging victorious due to a strong first-half display against the Bantams, with Sharp rounding off the scoring for the day at the Eco-Power after earlier strikes from Luke Molyneux and Jordan Gibson which came either side of Will Swann's initial 12th-minute equaliser for the visitors.
Sharp has continued to be an important asset for Grant McCann during his second spell at the club following his release from Sheffield United, with his experience aiding the club's title-winning season in the fourth tier last term, as well as their strong return to the third-tier this time around.
The 39-year-old striker had previously opened his account for the season in a 1-1 draw at the Eco-Power against last term's play-off semi-finalists, Wycombe Wanderers, after posting an assist in Rovers' shock 4-0 demolition of Championship leaders Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup First Round last month.
However, it was clear that his goal against Doncaster's local rivals this weekend was particularly sweet with his celebration that followed, mimicking the viral "pecked by the chickens" meme the Bradford fans have been using.
Sharp's initial finish would perhaps have normally done the talking, with the 39-year-old calmly slotting the ball past Sam Walker into the bottom right-hand corner after neatly weaving his way into the box, before performing a chicken-themed celebration in front of the 3,000 travelling supporters who made the short trip from West to South Yorkshire.
Unsurprisingly, those of a Doncaster persuasion were absolutely loving Sharp's antics, posting the celebration on social media which then caused a reaction from Bradford and further opposition supporters given the forward's reputation within the EFL.
The boyhood Sheffield United fan's celebration was compared by a Sheffield Wednesday supporter to that of Jamie Vardy, with the well-known Owls fan previously celebrating in similar ways at Bramall Lane and at Selhurst Park when finding the net against Crystal Palace.
Despite suffering a first defeat in all competitions under Graham Alexander, one Bradford supporter was able to see the funny side, posting an image in reference to the recent "pecked by the Chickens" sensation which has recently been doing the rounds when City have emerged victorious - in some ways mimicking Hull City's well-documented "Mauled by the Tigers" chant in the process.
Another response came from somebody who hopes to emulate Sharp's celebration alongside a teammate when scoring himself either on a Saturday or Sunday.
Not many predicted Doncaster for a season of struggle under the experienced boss that is McCann. However, even the most optimistic of supporters couldn't have foreseen their newly-promoted side sitting joint-top alongside freshly relegated Cardiff City at such an early stage of the season - albeit the Bluebirds were not in action this weekend due to international call-ups.
After sealing promotion against Bradford in April, it would have felt sweet for those in red and white to have ended their local rivals' unbeaten record, and they will also hope to see more celebration antics from Sharp in the coming weeks and months.
Despite his age, the forward has featured in all but two of Rovers' encounters across all competitions thus far, with five starts indicating that he hasn't lost any of his in-game intelligence and speed.
Next up for Doncaster is an away trip to Wigan Athletic next Saturday, with the Latics enduring a mixed start to Ryan Lowe's first full campaign at the Brick Community Stadium.
