Daniel Thioune’s first match in the Werder Bremen dugout ended in a narrow defeat at Freiburg, despite a man advantage for much of the second half after Johan Manzambi’s red card. According to BuLi News, the new coach felt confidence was the missing piece.

Thioune said the effort was evident but consistency and belief were lacking. He added the last two days of training offered a platform to build on, and lamented a 20-second swing from a near-classic to Freiburg’s goal.

Captain Marco Friedl was blunter. “It’s simply not enough if we don’t score goals,” he said, adding that Bremen keep getting into games but are falling short, and warning change is needed to avoid a rude awakening.

Jens Stage echoed that view, saying the team had energy and intent but little confidence, and that quality told at key moments. He pointed to Justin going close seconds before Freiburg scored, after which the match again became tight and could have gone either way.

The defeat drops Bremen into the bottom three and extends their winless run to 11 matches. League leaders Bayern Munich visit the Weserstadion next weekend.
