Let me take you back in time with Newcastle United.

A period of time when Eddie Howe’s side lost all their Premier League matches but one in a stretch of over eight weeks.

Six defeats in seven Premier League matches.

This was eight months ago.

The last game in that seven Premier League match sequence, which included six losses, was against… Manchester City.

Against all odds, Newcastle United almost won it.

At that time, Eddie Howe was right down to the bare bones and had been for months, basically the team picking itself match after match AND that included a 17 year old playing every game in the toughest part of the pitch, central midfield.

Back on 13 January 2024, this was the Newcastle team v Manchester City:

Dubravka, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Miley, Almiron, Isak, Gordon

United fell behind in the 26th minute but 11 minutes later they were ahead, thanks to two brilliant goals, Isak and Gordon getting them.

That is the way it stayed, right up to the 74th minute.

Eddie Howe had literally no viable subs to make, whilst Manchester City brought on the quality of Kevin De Bruyne to cruelly win the game in added time.

Newcastle United out on their feet.

This was the subs bench that say:

Karius, Gillespie, Dummett, Lascelles, Ritchie, Krafth, A Murphy, Parkinson, Hall

Two goalkeepers, veterans and young inexperienced teenagers.

Lewis Hall at the time was carefully getting integrated into the first team set-up and he was the only NUFC sub made, with 86 minutes gone.

Can Newcastle United do it today?

One thing for sure, Eddie Howe has a far stronger team and squad today, on paper at least.

Now they just have to bounce back to real form and do it on the pitch. With bench power to help as well.
