Not many games took place this week in Lazio history, but we do remember one of the club’s best players of the 1920s, Augusto Parboni.
Date: Sunday, July 6, 1947 Venue: Stadio Comunale, Turin Fixture: Juventus Lazio 3-3 An exciting match in which Lazio manage to draw coming from behind.
Date: Sunday, July 8, 1928 Venue: Campo Rondinella, Rome Fixture: Lazio Livorno 2-1, Coppa Coni The Biancocelesti beat Livorno and still have a glimmer of hope to reach the Coppa CONI final.
Date: Saturday, July 12, 1958 Venue: Stadio Olimpico, Rome Fixture: Lazio Roma 1-1, Coppa Italia Lazio was better in the first half, Roma in the second. The draw is consequential but it’s the Biancocelesti who go through to the quarter finals.
The early years of Lazio were characterized by quality players who nevertheless many have probably never heard of. One of them was Augusto Parboni.
Born in Rome on February 24, 1900, he joined Lazio in 1920 and played until 1927 with 83 appearances and six goals. He was part of the team that reached the national finals in 1923. Allegedly, he was the one who wrote a letter to the Director of the magazine Il Calcio complaining about the way Lazio had been treated by the media, who were already celebrating Genoa’s victory even before the beginning of the contest. Some things never change!
Parboni was an excellent defender and one of the best players Lazio had in those years. He was elegant and had a good insight into the game.
He died in Rome on July 12, 1984
