Pep Guardiola has one more year remaining on his contract as Manchester City manager. Despite this fact, speculation has surrounded Guardiola’s future throughout this season. David Ornstein first dropped the news that the 2025-26 season could Guardiola’s final season as City manager. From that point onward, Pep Guardiola has expertly deflected any questions about his future as City manager, until today. Guardiola was asked if this weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea would be his last trip to Wembley as Manchester City manager. Guardiola playfully gave his most definitive answer yet regarding whether he will remain in his post as City manager for next season.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup final, Pep Guardiola was asked whether his current tally of 19 trophies won during his decade as Manchester City manager is the definition of greatness. Also, Guardiola was asked if what his team has achieved during his tenure will only be appreciated when his time as City manager ends. Tellingly, when asked if this could be Guardiola’s final trip to Wembley as Manchester City manager, Guardiola reminded everyone he has one more year left on his current contract. Speaking earlier today he said: “Yeah, Of course! 19 titles in 10 years is not bad.”
“They know that, they don’t need to wait for when I’m leaving.”
“They know it has been fun! It has been f*****g FUN! So 19 titles, fighting for the 20th in 10 years is not bad, honestly.”
“No way! No way. I have one more year contract.”
The guessing game surrounding Pep Guardiola’s future as Manchester City manager has continued for the majority of this season. On several occasions, Guardiola has reminded everyone that he has one more year left on his current contract at City. Pep Guardiola has never broken a contract during his spells as manager at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, or Manchester City. Based on Pep Guardiola’s comments today, that doesn’t look like changing.
Of course, Guardiola could be playing with the media. He was in a jovial mood today at his pre-game press conference. Also, Pep Guardiola is a master of press conferences. However, he’d know that any comments from him about his future will be interpreted as a clue to his intentions. He dropped his most definitive statement yet when he stated that he has one more year left on his current contract. With that in mind, and given how energised Guardiola seems by the form of his young team, it is hard to see him walking away from his post as Manchester City manager just yet.
Pep Guardiola reminded everyone today that he has one more year left on his current contract with Manchester City. That doesn’t feel like an accident. Guardiola is too smart to do such things by mistake. Perhaps he has dropped the strongest hint yet that he will be Manchester City’s manager next season.
