Thomas Bramall has been named fourth official for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Arsenal, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, days after his contentious display in Leeds United’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

The referee drew criticism for sending off Leeds left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson for two bookings, the second viewed as soft. Gudmundsson collided with Ismaila Sarr on halfway and Bramall quickly showed a yellow, seemingly forgetting the Swede had already been cautioned, before Palace players and fourth official Paul Tierney intervened.

Bramall then declined to show a second yellow to Palace wing-back Brennan Johnson after he halted a counter-attack by bringing down James Justin, his fourth foul of the game.

He did, however, award Leeds a penalty for handball by Will Hughes. His assistant also correctly ruled out a Jefferson Lerma finish for offside.

At Wembley, Peter Bankes will referee, with Neil Davies and Steve Meredith as assistants and John Brooks on VAR. As is standard, that quartet and Bramall have been stood down from domestic league duties this weekend.

Those decisions have dominated the week’s debate. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher argued Gudmundsson was correctly dismissed and that Johnson should have remained on, while other pundits and ex-officials disagreed. Daniel Farke pointed to what he saw as inconsistent thresholds between the incidents.

Jarred Gillett has been appointed to Brentford’s visit to Elland Road on Saturday night, assisted by Simon Long and Nick Greenhalgh. Anthony Backhouse will be fourth official and Matt Donohue will operate VAR.
