Tottenham Hotspur held AS Monaco to a 0-0 draw in the UEFA Champions League, recording their first stalemate in 125 games.
Tottenham enjoyed a decent first half but were obliterated in the second 45. The hosts recorded 23 shots versus Spurs and should have found the back of the net.
However, Tottenham shotstopper Guglielmo Vicario delivered a fantastic performance between the sticks to earn his side a point and keep their unbeaten Champions League record intact (W1, D2).
According to Squawka, based on the quality of the shots the Spurs star faced, he prevented 2.68 goals against Monaco.
Vicario is just one of four goalkeepers to make eight (or more) saves and keep a clean sheet in a Champions League game for an English side in the last 10 seasons, after Alisson Becker, Nick Pope and David De Gea.
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank praised the Italian international, who had come under fire for some poor goalkeeping performances this season, especially the recent loss to Aston Villa.
Frank said (via THFC’s website), “Yeah, I think the two goals against Villa, I don’t think it’s like mistakes, or I don’t think it’s any of that, just two great finishes, but what I would say, and as you said, I think he was very good today.
“I think some of the saves were exceptional tonight, and it’s a big part why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day it can be a crucial point.”
Now, Vicario must build on this display and make it his new benchmark.
His shot-stopping heroics in Monaco showed what he’s capable of when fully focused and confident. Consistency, though, is what will define his season.
With crucial fixtures looming against Newcastle, Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United, PSG, and Arsenal, Tottenham need their No.1 at his very best.
If Vicario can replicate this level regularly, he won’t just silence his critics, he’ll re-establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers and a cornerstone for Spurs.
