FIFA confirms new regulation for the 2026 World Cup.. three minute pause in both halves of every match regardless of weather conditions.

FIFA formally announced significant adjustment to match operations at the 2026 World Cup which will be staged jointly in the United States, Canada & Mexico from 11 Jun to 19 Jul 2026.

The ruling requires referees to stop play after the 22 minute of each half granting players structured, 3 minute window to recover & hydrate.

Unlike previous tournaments where cooling breaks were activated only when temperatures crossed certain thresholds.. this rule applies to every fixture, in every stadium and irrespective of climate control or retractable roofing.

According to US outlet NBC News, the change discussed during meeting between global broadcasters & Manolo Zubiria, FIFA’s Chief Tournaments Officer.
