FC Barcelona have been scoring goals for fun so far this season. One of the major reasons for this is Robert Lewandowski turning the clock back and rediscovering his prime version. The Polish veteran is in incredible goalscoring form and looks unstoppable.
In 17 matches across all competitions, he has scored 19 goals and provided two assists. However, whatever said and done, irrespective of his incredible form, Lewandowski is 36 years old and he might not have long left at the highest level.
Even the fact that Lewandowski is playing at such a high level at 36 is quite incredible. When you compare him to some of his contemporaries, a case can be made that he is the Luka Modric of strikers, considering his longevity playing at the highest level.
Now, as per Fichajes, Barcelona has identified three strikers who they potentially could look to sign, to try and replace Lewandowski in the long run. It could all come down to one among these three, depending on what Flick wants and who he thinks is the perfect replacement for the Pole.
The first name is obviously Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres. He is the talk of the town after his incredible start to the season and the hattrick he scored against Manchester City in the Champions League means his stocks are at an all-time high. However, his operation could be complicated as the Portuguese club want at least €100m.
The second player is typical of the signings Barcelona have been making in recent times. Jonathan David has been one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 in recent seasons and is set to be available as a free agent next summer, having not yet put pen to paper on a new deal with LOSC Lille.
The last player the report talks about is Karim Adeyemi. Unlike the former two who are predominantly strikers, the German is versatile and can play anywhere across the front line. His versatility will enable him to adapt to different roles but he is not a natural Lewandowski replacement.
Among the three names mentioned in the report, signing Gyokeres would be the dream. Contrary to Fichajes’ claims, Barcelona may have a few tricks up their sleeve to bring down the talented striker’s asking price.
If signing Gyokeres is not an option, Jonathan David is a cheap and solid alternative. However, Adeyemi is not the answer to replacing the Polish veteran and let’s see how the club goes about their business in this regard.
