Facundo Buonanotte could make his Leeds United debut against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, giving Daniel Farke fresh options.
The 21-year-old joined on loan from Brighton last week, having turned Leeds down in the summer to join Chelsea. He was among the substitutes for the 1-0 win over Fulham, sealed by Lukas Nmecha in added time, and will have a full week’s training before Merseyside. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk outlines three ways Farke could use him.
He could come straight in for Brenden Aaronson in the inside-right role of a fluid 3-4-2-1. Aaronson drifts infield while Jayden Bogle holds width and the right centre-back steps on, a brief that suits Buonanotte’s movement and close control.
With Bogle pinning the full-back, the Argentinian may find space between the lines, though he would still need to track back and support. Few press and recover better than Aaronson, and his recent form makes any change a delicate call.
Farke could revisit the approach that underpinned December’s 3-1 win over Chelsea, pairing Lukas Nmecha with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. After a half-time switch against Manchester City, that duo caused problems, with Anton Stach and Ao Tanaka tidying up. Buonanotte could replace Tanaka as a No 10, link play and profit from knockdowns, while also offering set-piece delivery, though it may expose Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson.
If Leeds revert in game to a back four, as they have when chasing goals against Liverpool and Sunderland, Buonanotte could join a rotating trio behind Calvert-Lewin or Nmecha. He and Aaronson can alternate between wide and central positions, with Okafor drifting inside or joining the striker. Greater fluidity can unsettle defences but slightly reduces structure, inviting counters.
