Boris Rupert reporting from Lille

Borussia handed Lille their early goal by David (5), and missed several chances to equalise during the first half, which at times was extremely fast-paced. Alexsandro saved an attempt by Groß (17) and André an attempt by Brandt (20) on his own goal line. In the 54th minute Can succeeded in scoring the much-deserved equaliser from a penalty, as BVB were the more active, dangerous team. Shortly after a powerful shot by Adeyemi hit the left corner of the crossbar, they could celebrate their second goal, this time by Beier, making the final score 2-1 (65).

The scenario:

After the 1-1 draw in the first game, a winner had to be decided. BVB had got through the next round in knockout games against French opponents five times, and been knocked out twice. Borussia had won three of their five away games this Champions League season, and six overall of the previous ten. Lille had won ten of their previous twelve home games on the European stage, and had lost none.

Personell matters:

Following the game against Augsburg there were four personell changes: Anton, Sabitzer, Ryerson and Beier replaced Couto, Bensebaini, Özcan and Gittens (all on the bench) in a team which...

Tactics:

...despite having three central defenders stuck to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Anton took over the position of right fullback, Ryerson moved over to the left. In contrast to the previous games, Groß often stayed level with Sabitzer, even when in possession, as Ryerson came forward rather than cutting inside. Lille used a 4-3-3 formation with numerous position changes. When not in possession, Mukau came forward from the midfield to the front and exchanged places with Cabella or Haraldsson, who themselves were constantly changing sides.

Match & Analysis:

Borussia tried assert their presence from the start, but conceded after only five minutes due to gross individual mistakes. First Adeyemi lost possession far too easily in midfield. Ismaily had lots of space to the left and crossed the ball in from the edge of the penalty area. David wasn't being marked closely enough and took a shot with his left foot - Schlotterbeck may have managed to deflect it slightly, and Kobel let the ball roll between his legs.

Ryerson's shot from a distance in the 13th minute began a phase of pressure from the Black&Yellows, with three top chances to equalise or go a goal up. It was almost unbelievable that, despite everything that was happening in Lille's penalty area, the ball didn't want to go over the line. First, after Bouaddi lost possession, Guirassy brought the ball forward in a central position and passed to Groß slightly to his left, who had a lot of space in the penalty area and flicked the ball past the keeper towards the right corner of the goal, but Alexandro cleared it with his hip just before it reached the line, and the rebound went right into Chevalier's arms (17).

Three minutes later: Ryerson won the ball near the left corner flag, dribbled into the penalty area, and aimed for the right corner, but Chevalier was able to parry the ball and a corner was given. This led to a triple chance: a header by Brandt, parried by Chevalier, then an attempt by Guirassy in the kerfuffle that followed, but Chevalier got in the way again, parrying the ball away to the right, Brandt immediately took another shot, and this time it was cleared by André on the line (20).

After that the game calmed down and Borussia weren't acting fast enough any more: André had a good chance for Lille with a header (34), but it was BVB again before half time: Groß headed Beier's pass just over the crossbar (45+1).

In the second half, BVB continued to look for ways to push forward, established themselves in the opponents' half, and equalised in the 54th minute. Beier passed the ball for Guirassy to run onto, but Guirassy was taken out by Meunier in the penalty area. Can confidently secured the penalty in the middle of the net, after staring down Chevalier. During this phase, Lille looked like a boxer that had been defeated, letting the tempo drop, but after a long throw-in by Meunier to David, they had a good chance from a solid shot by Haraldsson, but Kobel plucked the ball out of the corner (61).

Dortmund continued to play the ball forward: Adeyemi hammered Ryerson's pass into the corner of the crossbar (62), Beier headed Ryerson's cross from a short distance just past the left post (63). Two minutes later a pass from the right by Anton ended up with Ryerson - the left-back was omnipresent when BVB were attacking - who passed to Guirassy in the penalty area. He spotted Beier, who hammered the ball with precision into the right corner from 14 metres away, making the score 2-1 (65). Fifteen minutes before the end of the game, Brandt - played in by Guirassy - sprinted towards the opponents' goal, but came under pressure and missed. However, the offside flag then went up.

David in the 79th minute and Akpom in the 85th minute both headed the ball from a short distance into Kobel's arms. But otherwise the BVB defence was solid and didn't let anything through.

Outlook:

In the last game before the international break, the Black&Yellows will be playing Leipzig on Saturday (kick-off 18:30 CET).
