Timothy Weah leans on an American mindset as he heads into a home World Cup, the United States opening against Paraguay at 3am on Saturday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. According to L'Équipe, he has repeatedly cited positivity and perseverance during Marseille’s troubles this season.

Family friend Gaëlle Mediem, regarded as his aunt, believes he has always treated dreams as achievable through work and self-belief. She was alongside the New York-born player for the 26 May squad announcement.

He grew up away from the spotlight while George Weah wound down his career at Chelsea, Manchester City and Marseille, spending weekends with a ball and at Rosedale Soccer in New York.

After youth spells in Florida and New York, he moved to Europe, trialled at Chelsea and Toulouse, then joined Paris Saint-Germain’s academy. Benoît Souvelain, who housed him at weekends, admired his refusal to give up.

Already a youth international for the Stars and Stripes, his senior choice followed despite eligibility for Liberia and Jamaica and interest from France. Advisor Badou Sambagué says he keeps to his positions rather than chasing sponsors or titles, and ties to Liberia, Jamaica and France remain strong.

Now 26, with 51 caps and seven goals, he is preparing for a second World Cup and competing with Sergino Dest on the right. He criticised ticket prices, drawing a rebuke from head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and appeared with New York mayor Zohran Mamdani to back discounted tickets.
