Tom Heaton reveals true feelings on Man United stay after more than 1000 days without playing | OneFootball

Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has disclosed how he truly feels about his return to the club after slightly over 1000 days without playing in a competitive game.

Heaton still playing a role at United

Heaton rejoined United in the summer of 2021, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for a further year.

His return marked a full-circle moment for the player, who had first signed for United’s academy as an 11-year-old and left on a free transfer in 2010 without making a first-team appearance.

The Englishman came back to United after a two-year stint with Aston Villa. He arrived to provide depth behind David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

Heaton has primarily had to be content with being United’s third-choice goalkeeper. His last league game came for Villa on 1 January 2020. His last taste of competitive minutes was 1,030 days ago. Despite not playing regularly, Heaton remains a key member of the squad.

The 39-year-old was named in Ruben Amorim’s leadership group earlier this year, alongside the likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

The experienced shot-stopper also coaches 18-year-old keeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes and works with number one Senne Lammens.

Heaton sat down with The Guardian and reflected on his second stint at Old Trafford. He stated that he has “zero regrets” about coming back and is still hungry to be the mainstay between the sticks.

Heaton’s candid revelation

He said about starting games, “The feeling doesn’t leave you. I’m still trying to get that shirt, so in that sense game days can be difficult sat up in the stands, doing the warm-ups with the lads and then getting changed again to play that supporting role.”

“My outlook can sometimes be bordering on deluded. I understand the optics of it, but I thought: ‘I’m going to take that on.’ The logical side of my brain knew that coming back here at 35 was probably more to fill this role. But I have zero regrets. I’ve loved being here.”

On why he rejoined United and chose to stay when he could be playing regularly elsewhere, Heaton explained, “There is so much of my personal history tied up in it. The chance to come back, be part of it, and try to get the club back to being a success was too good to turn down.”

Heaton said that his decision to leave United the first time was made after having to shadow the legendary Edwin van der Sar and being in the travelling contingent for the 2008 Champions League final win against Chelsea. He watched proceedings from the stands and that’ when he knew he had to go.

Heaton told The Guardian, “It was the right decision for me. Sir Alex [Ferguson] was forceful with me when I first said it to him but I’ll never forget that a few weeks later he had me back in the office to say that he understood the decision, respected it and would always be there for me.”

On working with Lammens, Heaton said the Belgian is “assured in what he is and who he is.”

United are next in action on Sunday when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
