Tommy Watson is nearing a loan move to Leicester City, with the League One club in pole position, Sunderland Echo understands.
No concrete agreement has been reached, though talks between Brighton and the Foxes are progressing.
The winger became a Sunderland promotion hero with a stoppage-time winner at Wembley in last year’s Championship play-off final, his final act before a permanent switch to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Since joining the south coast side, the 20-year-old has struggled for minutes, recording 10 senior appearances, nine as a substitute. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall in the Championship.
Elsewhere it has been claimed that a loan agreement between Leicester and Brighton is already in place, meaning the academy graduate could spend this season in the third tier.
Leicester are seeking an immediate return to the Championship after relegation last season, finishing 23rd under Gary Rowett having begun the campaign with Marti Cifuentes. Russell Martin took charge in June and has added Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy on free transfers, plus Manchester City full-back Christian McFarlane on loan.
