Keith Wyness recently shared an exclusive update with Football Insider about the manager hunt at Celtic Park, claiming that Motherwell’s Jens Berthel Askou is now the frontrunner to take over. This news arrives as Martin O’Neill gets ready to wrap up his time as interim boss at the end of the season, having stepped in to steady the team after Wilfried Nancy’s rough spell in charge. Askou has caught everyone’s eye this year by leading the Steelmen to fourth in the Scottish Premiership, trailing the leaders, Hearts, by only ten points.
Wyness, who has run the show at Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton, thinks the 43-year-old Danish coach is a top-tier choice because he already knows the ins and outs of the league. On top of that, the former chief believes the board sees Askou as a much more sensible pick than previous names linked to Major League Soccer.
“I think he is the obvious choice because he is now aware of the SPL. He understands that he’s playing great football. He’s exactly what the Celtic fans would want to see in terms of football philosophy. I think he would be an excellent pick. It makes, as I say, so much more sense than bringing somebody in from the MLS. So I think that’s going to be pretty much a done deal, and I think he’s the right one to go with for Celtic.”
Fans are starting to get behind the idea too, mostly because the manager plays the kind of attacking football that fits the club’s DNA. As a result, a deal looks like a safe bet as the hierarchy tries to build something lasting after a shaky run at home. Plenty of supporters feel the Dane brings exactly the kind of new energy needed to wake up a squad that had gone a bit stale under the old regime.

Askou usually sets his team up in a sharp 3-4-2-1 system that focuses on lightning-fast breaks and heavy pressing, a style that often rattles teams used to a slower game. He wants his players to push a high defensive line to choke the midfield, which forces mistakes in dangerous spots and turns into goals almost instantly. While some fans might worry he hasn’t won a big trophy yet, the way he has Motherwell punching above their weight shows he has a serious tactical brain and knows how to change things on the fly.
The 43-year-old former Denmark youth international is obsessed with fitness, making sure his players can keep up that intense pressure for the full match. Truly, moving for him is a smart play for Celtic because the club needs a leader who can mix technical talent with sheer hard work. Instead of hunting for famous names who don’t really care about Scottish football, the board has found a guy who lives and breathes the game here.
Plus, his arrival should help patch up the leaky defence that dropped so many points earlier in the season. When you look at the big picture, Askou has the tactical range and local knowledge to rebuild this squad and give Hearts a real run for the title next year. By getting him in now, the club get a massive head start on planning for the summer.
