Giuseppe Marotta has broken Inter Milan’s silence on the referee scandal, expressing surprise at the allegations while firmly distancing the club from any wrongdoing ahead of Sunday’s crucial trip to Torino.
The Inter president spoke to Sky Sport before kick-off, addressing the investigation into AIA leadership and the allegations that former designator Gianluca Rocchi sought to assign referees favourable to the Nerazzurri.
“We learn everything from the press,” Marotta said, with quotes via FCInterNews.
“These declarations surprise us. We do not have referees we like and ones we don’t. We know we have always acted with maximum correctness, and that is the most important fact, the one that should reassure everyone.”
He then turned the narrative around, pointing to decisions that went against Inter last season.
“Last year, and I don’t say this to complain, we objectively had adverse decisions, including acknowledged ones. I am referring, for example, to the penalty in Inter vs Roma.”
He added: “Today we are here thinking about this match, this championship and this Scudetto. I am calm. We are uninvolved and we will be in the future.”
On the specific allegation concerning a meeting at San Siro during the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Milan, Marotta was equally firm.
“It surprised me, I am not saying I don’t remember, I find no connection. I learned everything from the press and I have answered exhaustively. I don’t want to add anything more.”
Furthermore, when asked whether he expected anyone from the club to be called for questioning, his response was simple. “I have been very clear. I have nothing to add.”
On the season itself, Marotta closed with characteristic generosity toward those on the pitch.
“The compliments belong to the coach and the squad, the merit is theirs above all. We want to reach this double objective.
“We are focused on this exam, then we will think about the next opponent and a trophy we want to win for the tenth time. It would be something extraordinary for Inter.”
Speaking shortly afterwards to DAZN, with quotes again via FCInterNews, Marotta said the club are “very calm and confident in our integrity” and do not expect to face any repercussions.
Finally, the President closed by expressing that “Winning the Scudetto in front of our fans would be wonderful,” as the Nerazzurri close in on a title that could be won as early as next weekend.
