Tottenham could have a new head coach by the time they visit Sunderland next month, with Roberto De Zerbi in advanced talks to take charge. According to Press Association, he is set to step in immediately after talks reached an advanced stage.
Spurs refocused on De Zerbi after Igor Tudor departed on Sunday. The former Brighton manager had initially planned to wait until the summer to weigh up options, but now looks ready to reverse course and start at once.
He has been linked to the role for years, first in 2023 and again after Thomas Frank left on 11 February. A break until the end of the season had been expected after he exited Marseille in the same week.
Tottenham turned to Tudor as interim, but his 44-day spell brought five defeats in seven and raised fears of a first relegation since 1977. With Mauricio Pochettino contracted to lead the United States at this summer’s World Cup, De Zerbi is seen as the strongest viable candidate on the market.
First-team coach Bruno Saltor took training for players not on international duty following Tudor’s exit. A midweek appointment was anticipated to provide 10 days of preparation for the 12 April trip to the Stadium of Light, and De Zerbi is poised to be the choice.
