According to NY Times, Tottenham have rejected Nottingham Forest’s opening offer for midfielder Lucas Bergvall, and talks are expected to continue.

Forest remain keen on the 20-year-old, their primary summer target to replace Elliot Anderson, who Manchester City have agreed to sign in a £116 million deal.

Bergvall is under contract at Spurs until June 2031 but has told the club he would prefer to move this summer. He has attracted interest from England and Europe.

The Sweden international joined from Djurgarden for £8.5m in 2024, won Spurs’ player of the year and helped deliver the 2025 Europa League, the club’s first trophy in 17 years. Since Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival in March, he has started only once.

Tottenham have added Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in a deal worth up to £100m, further crowding midfield options.

Aston Villa had explored Bergvall but are now set to complete moves for Joao Gomes and Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, and are in talks to sign Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich after his 2025-26 campaign at Spurs.

Bergvall played in all four of Sweden’s 2026 World Cup fixtures before they were eliminated by France in the round of 32.

Forest, who made Omari Hutchinson their £37.5m record signing last summer, would need to surpass that fee to land Bergvall. Anderson’s move is set to bring more than £100m profit, given his effective £15m cost from Newcastle with Odi Vlachodimos a £20m makeweight.
