Tottenham have signed Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. The 21-year-old joins for a reported 98 million euros, a club-record fee, with the contract length not disclosed.

In the club announcement, head coach Roberto De Zerbi said he sees Fernandes as calm under pressure, progressive on the ball, fully committed to the team and brave in tough moments, adding that Spurs are the right environment for his development and that he looks forward to working with him.

A Sporting academy graduate, Fernandes impressed despite two relegations in succession, first with Southampton in 2024-2025, then with West Ham in 2025-2026.

Spurs, who recently finished 17th in the Premier League, have already added Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for 60 million euros.

That status may be short lived. Sandro Tonali should soon join from Newcastle for 115 million euros.
