Roberto De Zerbi faces an injury concern at Tottenham after Pape Sarr missed Senegal’s friendly against Gambia.
Sunderland Echo reports that De Zerbi was confirmed as Spurs head coach on Tuesday, signing a five-year deal. Spurs are one point above the bottom three and travel to Sunderland after the break.
Sarr featured in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Peru, then was omitted from the squad to face Gambia.
With seven games left and no league win in 2026, De Zerbi inherits a lengthy absentee list that includes Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus.
His appointment has also prompted opposition from parts of the fanbase, with three supporters’ groups issuing No to De Zerbi statements linked to past remarks about Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood was charged in October 2022, but the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new material emerged, saying there was no realistic prospect of conviction. He denied the charges and later resumed his career, joining Marseille in 2024.
In November, De Zerbi said Greenwood was a good person who had paid a heavy price and that he knew a different person to the one portrayed.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust said it had serious and far-reaching concerns about the appointment. Proud Lilywhites, the club’s LGBTQI+ fan group, said they disagree with the choice but will continue to support the players. Spurs Reach also voiced cultural misgivings while pledging continued backing.
