Tottenham’s search for a new wide player looks to be on hold, with Football Insider reporting that Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas is no longer considered a top target for the January transfer window. Spurs had been exploring options on the flanks after Manchester City blocked their move for Savinho in the summer, but the landscape has shifted.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, it was explained: “Vargas is a player who’s done really well for Sevilla, Swiss international as well. So he’s obviously, I think, attracting interest from a number of clubs, not just Tottenham. Spurs are quite well-stocked out wide after they got a deal done for Simons, who plays in the same position as Vargas.”
The summer arrival of Xavi Simons has effectively addressed Tottenham’s need for width, with Wilson Odobert, Mathys Tel and Richarlison all able to operate on the flanks. Football Insider note that Thomas Frank is now expected to prioritise strengthening other areas of the squad when the mid-season window opens.

Vargas, who remains under contract at Sevilla until 2029, would command a significant fee. Given Spurs’ improved depth, committing major funds to another winger is no longer seen as essential.
Spurs’ recruitment department will instead switch focus to positions where the squad remains light, with central midfield and defensive reinforcements thought to be higher on the agenda. “I don’t think it’s a priority for Tottenham to be signing another wide player,” the podcast added, underlining that a deal for Vargas in January is unlikely.
Tottenham’s decision reflects a more measured approach after a summer of targeted investment. With European qualification a realistic ambition, Frank appears set to consolidate in key positions rather than add competition where it is already strong.
For Spurs fans, this might feel like a mixed message. On one hand, the club have genuine depth out wide, and there is logic in focusing resources on central midfield or defence. Xavi Simons has quickly looked at home in the Premier League, Odobert is developing well, and Tel offers a different threat off the bench.
However, the scepticism comes from past windows where Spurs have been reluctant to act decisively and then been left short when injuries hit. Passing on Vargas now could look risky if an injury crisis strikes during the second half of the season.

Sevilla will demand a strong fee for Vargas given his contract situation, so perhaps Spurs are playing the long game. Supporters will hope that if the opportunity arises at a reasonable price, the club remain ready to act rather than standing still. January is often about fine margins, and failing to add depth in the right areas could undermine Tottenham’s progress at a critical stage of the campaign.
