Tottenham could have a new head coach in place next month, with Roberto De Zerbi in advanced talks to take over immediately, according to the Press Association.

Spurs turned back to De Zerbi after Igor Tudor left on Sunday. Although the former Brighton boss had initially planned to wait until the summer to weigh up options, he now looks set to change course.

A five-year contract is on the table, which would make the 46-year-old the club’s fourth head coach in 10 months. He had been linked with the role in 2023 and again after Thomas Frank left on 11 February, though a break until season’s end had been expected following his Marseille exit in the same week.

Tottenham had installed Tudor as interim, but his 44-day stint produced five defeats in seven and a catalogue of questionable tactical choices, increasing the threat of a first relegation since 1977. With fans’ favourite Mauricio Pochettino contracted to lead the United States at this summer’s World Cup, De Zerbi has benefited from being the most viable candidate currently available.

First-team coach Bruno Saltor oversaw training for those not on international duty. A new head coach is expected to be hired by midweek, allowing 10 days to prepare for the 12 April trip to the Stadium of Light, and that appointment is set to be De Zerbi.
