Tottenham Hotspur have won the race to sign West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes after agreeing an £85 million deal, according to journalist David Ornstein.
Spurs have submitted the highest offer for the Portuguese star, with the guaranteed fee meeting West Ham’s valuation.
Fernandes has now chosen a move to Tottenham, despite attracting strong interest from Manchester United and other clubs during the summer transfer window.
Other clubs explored a move for the 21-year-old but ultimately withdrew after the overall cost of the transfer, including wages, exceeded their budget.
Tottenham were decisive in their approach and are now on the verge of signing one of the Premier League’s most highly rated young midfielders.
Fernandes enjoyed an impressive individual campaign despite West Ham’s relegation from the top flight.
He made 36 Premier League appearances in 2025/26, registering three goals and four assists while establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers.
His addition further strengthens Roberto De Zerbi’s squad as Spurs continue an aggressive rebuild ahead of the new campaign.
Fernandes joins a midfield group featuring Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
However, it is worth noting that Bergvall is seeking a move elsewhere.
Yves Bissouma is also leaving following the expiry of his contract, while Joao Palhinha has returned to Bayern Munich as Spurs couldn’t agree a deal.
Tottenham’s willingness to break their transfer record underlines the club’s ambition.
After reconstructing their defence, attention has now turned to midfield, with Fernandes viewed as a player who adds creativity, technical quality and long-term value.
