Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth showcased their resilience but also highlighted familiar flaws. The hosts fought back from two goals down to earn a point, yet the performance did little to inspire confidence ahead of their must-win Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar. For large spells, Spurs lacked control, and Bournemouth took full advantage. A careless pass in midfield led to Marcus Tavernier’s opener, while Evanilson doubled the visitors’ lead after more shaky defending. Tottenham were vulnerable in transition and struggled to impose their game. Ange Postecoglou admitted his side looked “nervous” and “anxious,” conceding they had played into Bournemouth’s hands. “It was a chaotic game for sure,” he said. “We added to the chaos a little bit. Just with the ball, we were careless with our passing, and that allowed the game to be played on the terms Bournemouth would like.”The introduction of Son Heung-min and Lucas Bergvall at half-time injected some much-needed urgency, and Spurs eventually clawed their way back. Pape Matar Sarr pulled one back with a mis-hit cross that found the net, before Son’s late penalty salvaged a point. Yet even in their best moments, Tottenham looked fragile. Justin Kluivert hit the post for Bournemouth, and the visitors remained a threat on the counter throughout. With 10 league games remaining, Spurs sit 13th in the Premier League and are out of contention for European qualification through the domestic route. Their only path to the Champions League is by overturning their 1-0 deficit against Alkmaar and going on to win the Europa League. On current form, that seems a tall order.Postecoglou has always insisted he will not compromise his attacking principles, but his side’s lack of defensive control remains a major concern. “We never had control or momentum or fluency in the game,” he admitted. “It ended up becoming a basketball game, and that really suits them.”At home, Tottenham have now taken just six points from their last nine league matches. The optimism of the early season has faded, replaced by mounting frustration. If they cannot show greater composure on Thursday, their European campaign — and their season — could come to an abrupt end.
