There are growing reports that Francesco Totti is set to return to Roma in a directorial role, and Monday’s updates claim that a decisive meeting regarding the potential appointment of the Giallorossi icon will take place in the coming days.

Report: Totti nearing Roma return in hands-on role

A return to Roma for Totti has been under discussion for much of the 2025-26 season. There had been suggestions that he could return in an ambassadorial role ahead of the club’s centenary year, but the latest updates suggest that Gian Piero Gasperini wants him to have more involved, operational powers.

Totti spent the entirety of his legendary playing career at the Stadio Olimpico and had a brief spell as an executive following his retirement in 2017, but left after two years, feeling that he wasn’t being utilised correctly and that he had been made to feel like a mere mascot.

That situation could soon change, as reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Gasperini is pushing for Totti to return in a hands-on directorial role. The intention is for the former captain to be involved in the assessment of players and new signings, and to act as a bridge between the dressing room and the board room.

Claudio Ranieri was meant to fill this role in 2025-26, but he has since left the club after a public falling-out with the head coach. Sporting director Frederic Massara has recently left the club as well, which leaves Roma needing to appoint a new director or two before the 2026-27 season starts.

Gasperini’s former Atalanta colleague Tony D’Amico is poised to replace Massara as sporting director, and it is increasingly possible that Totti will join them in the Giallorossi executive hierarchy.
