Toulouse have condemned on Wednesday the political hijacking of Louna Lapassouse’s goal celebration by Alice Cordier, president of the far-right identitarian group Collectif Némésis. The club expressed dismay at what it called a shameful attempt to exploit the gesture.

Toulouse stressed that Lapassouse’s hand sign simply forms her initials and that she has used it for many years. It rejected any link to Nazism and reiterated its unequivocal opposition to all forms of discrimination.

Cordier appeared alongside a former member of an ultra-right Lyon group while making the same sign. The pose could be read as a reference to the SS under Nazi Germany.

After the image circulated, Cordier sought to draw a parallel with the Toulouse player in response to criticism. Through her collective, she also claimed the gesture referred to the rap group L’Uzine.

L’Uzine distanced itself from that association, describing itself as anti-racist from the outset. It urged Cordier to find another excuse.
