Trai Hume has played down surprise links to Real Madrid, the Sunderland defender dismissing the speculation while on duty with Northern Ireland.

Defensa Central claims Madrid are monitoring Hume among several right-sided options, including Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson, as potential low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Dani Carvajal expected to depart, and puts his price at about €22 million, roughly £19 million.

Asked at a Northern Ireland press conference, Hume said: “Obviously, I seen it, but I didn't really think too much of it to be honest”.

Hume was ever-present in the league last season under Régis Le Bris as Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League. Naturally a right-back, he has filled multiple roles with intensity and reliability.

Signed from Linfield in January 2022, he earned fresh terms after promotion and is contracted until the summer of 2030. He scored his first Premier League goal in the 4-3 defeat to Aston Villa, then hit the opener in the 2-1 win over Chelsea that sealed the club’s first European qualification since 1973-74.
